The British economist who was principal critic of established economic theory in the inter-war period, seeking a synthesis between socialism and capitalism by insisting that full employment could be attained through public investment. He was financial adviser to the government during the Second World War. He was also a member of the literary circle known as the ‘Bloombury Group’ and a patron of the theatre and arts.
